Bigger Is Better: A Fashion Week Jewelry Roundup

September 17, 2008

New York's fashion week provided a peek preview of the jewelry, gemstones, colors and styles that'll be blooming in spring 2009.

Huge necklaces, bawdy brooches, layered chains, giant earrings and chunky bangles are the trends spilling out of Fashion Week's runways this year. The hottest designers are wowing critics with their spring ready-to-wear collections, and Jewelry.com is happy to bring you a roundup of the season's best and brightest.

Marc Jacobs

Marc Jacobs hit it out of the ballpark with his zany, suffragist, early Americana collection. Necklaces the size of small handbags and giant, stacked bangles were just some of many layers to each look.

DKNY and William Rast

Donna Karan continued to take inspiration from the streets, as her DKNY collection featured the layered chain trend with her must-have basics. Justin Timberlake's new company, William Rast, followed suit as his country girl meets rock-and-roll line used chains and big leather cuffs with their varied interpretations of T-shirts, cut-offs and boots.

Zac Posen and Betsy Johnson

Tony Burch and Monique Lhuillier

Zac Posen featured palm frond-sized dangle earrings with his layered gowns and flirty skirts. Betsy Johnson's flouncy, bouncy dresses were accented with a bow choker (another shape that is trending this season), chunky necklaces and big bangles; and the Tory Burch show took the necklace-as-art look to a new level. Yellow gold continues to be the must-have metal, as Monique Lhuillier featured long gold chain pendants by jewelry designer, John Hardy, to accessorize her line.

Oscar de la Renta

Perhaps the most impressive jewelry showing was at the always classy, Oscar de la Renta show. Giant coral necklaces and cereal bowl-sized hoop earrings were just some of the stunning pieces worn with gowns Hollywood's A-list will surely eyeball for their acceptance speeches.

So how to incorporate these trends into your own wardrobe? Think bigger is better. Troll vintage stores and grandma's jewelry box. Visit your local mall retailers and department stores that offer a wide selection of long chains and pearl strands you can layer. And don't forget that sometimes all you need is one chunky bangle or one pair of drop earrings to make an outfit work.

It's no time to be a wallflower, jewelry lovers. Get out there and embrace your inner fashionista with the big, the bawdy and the beautiful this season!
