Michelle Obama's Jewelry Guru
February 2, 2009
We
all know by now that Jason Wu is the designer of Michelle Obama's elegant,
off-the-shoulder Inaugural gown. He's been interviewed by every news outlet and
will surely get a huge boost when his line debuts at
Fashion
Week this month. But what about her diamond jewelry?
Our nation's first lady has what one might call a jewelry guru in funky designer-to-the-stars, Loree Rodkin. Obama's shoulder-length diamond earrings at the Inaugural Ball were Rodkin's white gold and triple rose-cut danglers with garland diamond briolette drops. And that's not the only time Mrs. Obama rocked a Rodkin look.
In total, Rodkin was selected for four key Obama moments: Election Night, The Inaugural Concert, Kids Inaugural Concert on The Disney Channel and the Inaugural Ball. All pieces worn to The Inaugural Ball will become part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Museum.
So who is this diamond diva that has a virtual ice monopoly on the First Lady? Rodkin is a former interior designer and talent manager who turned to jewelry making over a decade ago. Her celebrity clientele consists of powerful women with their own unique style, including Cher, Sharon Stone and last year's Oscar darling, funky Juno writer, Diablo Cody. Obama was introduced to the jewelry brand through Chicago's premier luxury boutique Ikram, where she has been a longstanding client.
"It's
a privilege to be a part of history," Loree Rodkin gushed in an AP report. "The
First Lady is a symbol of hope, courage and great style. I am honored that she
has chosen my jewelry."
And you don't have to be married to the leader of the free world to get a little Rodkin of your own. Her collection is available nationwide at Neiman Marcus and at specialty stores in Hong Kong, France, Italy, Russia, London, Greece, Switzerland, St. Barts and freestanding Loree Rodkin boutiques in Japan.
