Jewelry fashion has taken a down-to-earth turn this spring, as natural materials like turquoise, wood, moonstone and malachite are finding their rightful place alongside other fine jewelry categories.

"Authentic more natural stones are the 'new bling,' "Julie Gilhart, senior vice president and fashion director of Barneys New York told the Los Angeles Times.

"There is a handmade craft and artisanal feel to them, which feels fresh and new."

Stars like Drew Barrymore are ditching their diamonds and turning up the turquoise on the red carpets, and designers like Yves St. Laurent are using earthy gems like agates arranged in rough, organic settings in their jewelry collections.

And last week the New York Times reported the return of another natural material in jewelry - wood. From ebony and walnut to tagua nut and olivewood, designers like Boho Chic poster child, Nicole Richie, are using the eco-friendly material to create everything from high-end bridal jewelry to basic ready-to-wear cuffs and cocktail rings.
