Madeleine K. Albright Honored for Brooch Diplomacy

The Jewelry Information Center recently selected our former Secretary of State to receive the GEM Style Award at its eighth annual gala. See how Albright used the power of jewelry to shape history.

Jewelry Information Center (JIC), the consumer public relations and marketing arm of Jewelers of America will bestow another honor upon former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright - namely the coveted Style Award at its eighth annual GEM Awards gala in January 2010.

Dr. Albright made history in 1997, when she became the highest ranking woman in the U.S. government as the first female Secretary of State, and her tenure was marked with tenacious negotiating with some of the world's toughest leaders.

While serving for President Clinton, Albright brought attention to the significance of fine jewelry by wearing brooches that purposefully reflected her views about the situation at hand. "I found that jewelry had become part of my personal diplomatic arsenal," she has said.

Dr. Albright's passion for jewelry is documented in her new book, Read My Pins: Stories from a Diplomat's Jewel Box, and the supporting Museum of Arts and Design exhibition, Read My Pins: The Madeleine Albright Collection. Both explore jewelry as a diplomatic, political and social tool.

"Jewelry is one of the strongest forms of non-verbal communication. Each of Dr. Albright's pins reflects a significant moment in her life and in the history of our nation's politics. We are so honored that Dr. Albright will share her stories and style with us at a very special GEM Awards," Martin Gatins, JIC GEM Awards chairman stated in a press release.
