New York Fashion Week Trends

September 16, 2010

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week is wrapping up in the Big Apple, and we've got all the hot trends fresh from the runways. Guess what decade is making a comeback?

September in New York means only one thing to jewelry gawkers and fashion followers: Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. And this season - the first at their new Lincoln Center home base - all the top designers provided Spring 2011 Ready-To-Wear looks that ran the gamut from understated chic to bold beauty.

If Fall 2010 is all about 'camel', Spring 2011 is a whitewash, with designers like Michael Kors and Donna Karan creating a wonderland of white options in everything from short dresses to longer looks. Sheer fabrics in slouchy silhouettes are replacing 'tight' and 'tailored', and classic styles like belted trench coats are making a strong showing from the likes of Marc Jacobs and Derek Lam, among others.

Bold prints were featured in icon Diane von Furstenberg's line, and the softer side of the 70s (think Joni Mitchell) emerged in Marc by Marc Jacobs' and Anna Sui's collections.

What's new for jewelry? Like our blogger, Jewelry Insider, we couldn't find much in any of the spring collections. The statement necklaces and layered bangles that lit up previous Fashion Week runways went missing in place of wide-brimmed hats, hair accessories (big flowers) and sensible handbags.

The lesson then? Stick with small pendant necklaces (like Brad Pitt does here), stud earrings and an elegant fashion ring or bracelet. Less is more. But don't tell that to Project Runway winner Christian Siriano, who brought down the house with his huge fuchsia creation (first picture above) sure to make an appearance on Lady Gaga or one of her acolytes sometime soon.
