Huge Diamond Found in South Africa

September 9, 2010

A remarkable rough diamond was just discovered that could fetch millions. Find out the crazy carat count!

Many people may not have heard of the small South African kingdom of Lesotho, but it sits on earth that's rich with some of the globe's most significant diamonds.

Mining company, Gem Diamonds, recently unearthed a sparkling 196-carat rough diamond in their Lesotho location - the mine responsible for three of the world's top 20 rough diamonds, including the 603-carat Lesotho Promise which sold for $12 million.

Stretching a dazzling 1.18 inches across, this rough stone is expected to bring in a substantial price per carat, as preliminary examinations indicate it will produce polished diamonds of top color and clarity.

While this is a substantial diamond find, it's still dwarfed by the 3106-carat Cullinan Diamond, which was discovered in 1905 and stands as the largest gem-quality diamond ever found.
