Diamond
rings are coveted by more than blushing brides-to-be. Some of the most stoic
sports stars can be brought to tears when they get one - especially if it
commemorates 16 championship wins.
Enter: The Los Angeles Lakers, who received their blingy championship rings yesterday in a star-studded ceremony at the Staples Center.
The icy jewels were created by celebrity designer, Jason of Beverly Hills, and contain 16 oversized diamonds to commemorate each title. Smaller round diamonds balance out the design along with an engraved chronicle of the team's championship run and a three-dimensional sculpture of each player's face(!).
As a final touch, each ring is adorned with a small piece of leather cut from the ball used in the Game 7 victory over the Celtics last year.
By all accounts, it is the most extravagant championship ring in the history of all sporting events.
But Laker forward, Ron Artest, announced that he's auctioning off his ring to the highest bidder and plans to use the proceeds to fund mental health services for youths who can't afford counseling. Artest, who thanked his psychiatrist after last year's win, has said he will try not to wear the ring (his first), so the winner will be the first person to try it on.
That's the best idea we've heard since Kim Kardashian refused her $1 million birthday cake!
