Couture Fashion Week 2012: Black, Blue and Hats Galore

January 27, 2012

Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week wrapped up this week and left us with jaw-dropping trends to look forward to in 2012. Check out Jewelry.com's couture trend breakdown from Chanel to Jean Paul Gaultier and Alexis Mabille.

The televised broadcast of the Royal Wedding last April introduced us to the fascinator. Ever since then, tall, crazy-shaped hats pinned to the tops of women's heads have slowly made their way into mainstream fashion. While some may wonder how this accessory even stays put on ones head, it looks like when it comes to the fashion industry, it's not going anywhere anytime soon. And recent red carpet events such as the Golden Globes and the hair wear choices of Charlize Theron and Michelle Williams, it now appears that an ensemble is not complete until it is 'topped off' in one way or another.

French designer Alexis Mabille made floral elegance come to life this week with the blooming headpieces donned by models in his runway show. These enormous flowers that matched the brightly-hued gowns of this collection - and models' faces - are sure to be a memorable look that many expect to be 'off to the races.' The garden-flair hair wear trend continued with Maurizio Galante topping his models off with halos of greenery and hanging flowers to accompany his collection that was inspired by springtime flora.

Jean Paul Gaultier brought a dash of sparkling darkness to his runway show in the form of black jewelry. The show, inspired by the late Amy Winehouse, featured models with beehive hairstyles, exotic black makeup and beauty marks. Large doorknocker black earrings, choker-style necklaces and wide cuffs were a common accessory on his runway show.

Earlier this month, we said blue was to be a color to watch for in 2012 when it comes to jewelry. A hue with so many shades available makes it a color that complements anyone, and Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel would agree. His runway show took flight with fashion inspired by airline stewardesses of the 1960s (PanAm, anyone?). The models were head to do in bluesy bliss, donning everything from headwear to long dangling earrings, nail polish and shoes, and of course, a breathtaking assortment of 60 ensemble featuring 150 shades of blue.
