Super Bowl Sure Thing – Tiffany to Make Trophy for 38th Consecutive Year
No surprises in the Super Bowl this year – as far as the maker of the trophy for the winning team is concerned, that is. For the 39th consecutive year, Tiffany & Co is making the Vince Lombardi Super Bowl Trophy to be presented to the winning team on Super Bowl Sunday on February 6 when the Philadelphia Eagles take on the New England Patriots. The 22-inch-high trophy weighs nearly seven pounds and takes approximately four months and 72 hours to complete at Tiffany's workshop in Parsippany, New Jersey.
After the field ceremony in Jacksonville, Florida, the trophy will be returned to Tiffany's workshop where the name of the winning team will be hand engraved on the trophy.
Originally designed by Tiffany for the first Super Bowl in 1967, the trophy was renamed in 1970 for Vince Lombardi, coach of the Green Bay Packers, winners of the first two Super Bowls.
The design features a regulation-size football rendered entirely in sterling silver. Tiffany also creates trophies for other major U.S. sporting events, including the National Basketball Association Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy, the World Series Trophy for Major League Baseball, and the U.S. Open Tennis Championship Trophies.
